Rachel Wells

Senior Rachel Wells took Transitions this Fall 2023 semester. 

Wells came to Houghton from New York City, where she’d attended The King’s College for two years. When King’s shuddered due to financial woes, Houghton offered a generous teach out program, making it a clear choice. But it still wasn’t easy for Wells to start over in a new place for the second time in three years.

Wells grew up in suburban Florida—vastly different from both New York City and Houghton. 

She didn’t tour King’s, and had only spent half a day in New York City before moving there.

Wells said that her new life “did not feel real for a very long time.”

Thrust into not only starting classes, Wells also had to learn how to grocery shop, cook, and make friends in a place where she knew no one. She contracted COVID-19 in her first month and had to spend time in isolation, which worsened her homesickness. But she pushed through, and in time, grew to enjoy living within walking distance of Battery Park and its views of the Statue of Liberty.

By her second year, Wells said she found she “actually love[d] living in the city.”

Highlights included her college professors, classmates, prayer group, babysitting, and studying at the city’s many coffee shops. She enjoyed King’s unique culture of debate and friendly competition, tutoring her housemates to win a writing contest. It was the only contest the House of Queen Elizabeth won in her time there.

However, the year was fraught with tension as King’s financial woes slowly became public. 

Zoom calls with executives became routine. The interim president, Steven French, said that more money was needed to finish the semester. Students began getting rent notices for their college housing. Yet through May 2023, the school claimed no intention to close.

Then King’s announced no classes would be taught in the 2023-2024 school year. 

Forced to transfer somewhere else, Wells “eventually came around to the idea of Houghton.” Many of Wells’ family members have attended Houghton University.

Wells misses the iced oat milk lattes at Olive’s, her favorite coffee shop; her babysitting job; and her former professors and classmates. But she’s found new people —and drink orders—at Houghton. 

Wells really enjoys chapels. “Hot take, I guess?” she chuckled, acknowledging that many students don’t feel the same way.

And Wells has had a blast at Houghton’s events, including intramural water polo. 

Wells hopes to return to New York City from time to time to visit friends, although she plans to move home to Florida after graduation. There, she wants to teach alongside her high school English teacher. 

Ultimately? She’d like to be Dr. Wells. 

She asks herself, “should you be saying that right now because you’re an undergraduate?” But she still dreams. ★

As the Darts Fly

Foam in the Liberal Arts

It’s a Saturday night. As you approach the Chamberlain building you see the lights inside are dimmed and you can feel the pounding of the music emanating from inside. There is a mass of people loading NERF blasters and preparing for battle. The first game of the night is announced, “Zombies,” and everyone yells excitedly. This is Foam in the Liberal Arts, or FILA, Houghton’s NERF club.

FILA CMYKFILA meets most Saturday nights in the Chamberlain building from 8:00-11:00 p.m. and has been a weekend highlight for some students for several years. It is “a great way to wind down and have fun with your friends and meet new people,” said first year student, Kirsten Brady. Brady said what she enjoys most is the “opportunity to run through the halls of a building acting like kids for a few hours, and the bonus is you get to shoot people.”

A typical night at FILA consists of about six to eight different games. “We usually start off each night with a fan favorite game, usually ‘Humans vs. Zombies,’” said FILA president, Justin Bullard, junior. “After that we like to mix up the games to keep it fresh each time we have an event. We can play any combination of games on our roster such as ‘3&1’ (teams of four with one medic and three survivors), ‘Team Deathmatch,’ or a frequent-member favorite, ‘All Medics,’ which is an all out free-for-all where anyone can shoot anyone and anyone can revive anyone.”

Sophomore, Shannon Derby, said, “FILA has definitely been a fantastic experience! I tend to be pretty introverted and FILA helps to pull me out of my shell and get to know people outside of my regular friend groups. I’ve made some really close friends through it. It’s also definitely adrenaline pumping and by the time the night is over, I am already excited for the next Saturday!”

FILA received official status as a club on campus last spring, which has come into effect this fall. Within the campus service budget, the club event fund exists to sponsor certain clubs, such as FILA. The club continues to have a budget, which the cabinet uses to purchase darts as well as pay for repairs to Chamberlain. In previous years, this has been an issue. Last year, the glass casings of two paintings on the second floor were shattered on separate occasions, stopping game play for the night each time. In addition to these rare incidents, the walls have accrued scuffs and markings.

Club members also believe it to be a recruiting tool and selling point for the college. When prospective student tours pass through Chamberlain, the guides often have them pause to look up at the skylight to see suction-cup darts which have been stuck there for years.  “I’ve heard from different students that the NERF club is actually one of the reasons why they picked Houghton over some of their other choices,” said, senior, Caroline VanVleck.

Some students and professors have expressed concern in regards to the noise level produced by students running through the halls. “What if there are people in here trying to study or do work?” said, junior, Brittany Hark, who was working in the Mac Lab during a FILA event. “It doesn’t bother me. The music is sometimes a little loud, but I have headphones for that. But I could see how it might bother someone who was doing a little more serious work,” said Hark.

Despite these concerns, Bullard said, “The purpose of FILA is to give students a way to blow off steam and get away from their busy schedules.”

Programs Hope to Improve Transition to Life after College

As seniors graduate this year, Houghton College is revising and enhancing efforts to help students transition out of Houghton and into further education or the working world. Career Services and Student Life are directly involved in programs aimed at the goal of preparing students to enter the world.

Vice President for Student Life, Rob Pool, said, “One view is that every aspect of college prepares you to transition out.” In a broad sense, Houghton’s purpose throughout each student’s entire time at Houghton, from enrollment to graduation, is to prepare students for a life focused on and help them transition out of Houghton.

Pool believes that much of the preparation for leaving Houghton is organic—built into the entire Houghton experience—from formal academic and spiritual life activities to residence life and stress management. While Houghton has thus effectively helped students transition into college, it is less clear how successfully Houghton has aided them in transitioning out of college.

Because this preparation is hard to see, some of the new transition endeavors involve, in Pool’s words, “re-packaging”  existing programs so that students see the value of what they already have.  Last year, Career Services held a business-related fashion show to help students know what type of attire is needed for a professional career. Although Career Services gave away hundreds of dollars in professional clothing, only six students participated in the event. This year, the event has been restructured and will be part of the Campus Store’s fashion show on March 15.

There are also new programs, most notably a pilot program for a small group of current sophomores, who in March will attend a retreat designed to help them discover their future vocations and establish a plan for moving toward their goals for the future. Dr. Pool hopes that this program will serve as a model that may be replicated on a larger scale in order that all students can benefit from it.

Career Services is also working hard to make students aware of the opportunities and resources available through their office.

Brian Reitnour works as the Coordinator of Career Services to help students translate their liberal arts education, which encompasses academics, clubs, sports, and other activities, into vocational opportunities beyond Houghton.

As Reitnour designs events and services for students, he tries to figure out what students want, what employers want, and what he can do to bridge the gap between the two. He said, “On a yearly basis, we have to figure out and re-figure out where we want to put our time and energy.”

One connection between students and professionals is Houghton Connects, a feature of the online Job Shop. This service links current students with alumni who have similar interests so that they can develop a mentoring or advising relationship. Additionally, Houghton alumni who are now employers often return to campus to recruit Houghton students. On March 19, eleven employers will be on campus for the Career Fair from 11:00-2:00.

On HELP Day, March 13, Career Services will offer  job- and internship-search workshops, alternative chapels, and financial management workshops to give students knowledge they will need once they leave Houghton.

Other opportunities for students through Career Services include Teacher Recruitment Days in Buffalo, free transportation to the Rochester Area Career Expo, and individual appointments. Reitnour said he finds individual appointments the most effective because students can pursue the help they want, whether that be for resumes, cover letters, graduate school, application processes, or even choosing a major.

Reitnour stressed that Career Services is not only for seniors, although typically about 50% of each year’s graduating class will utilize their services. His word of advice, applicable to all students regardless of academic class, is “Don’t Wait.” Starting sooner—finding internships, writing resumes, applying for interviews—makes the whole process easier.

Likewise, Dr. Pool emphasized the value of starting early. He said that by the end of sophomore year, students should have finalized their academic plans, established clear vocational goals, know how to maintain high wellness levels, and be creating a network of people who can act as mentors and recommenders. These actions are embedded in the Houghton experience and other services such as the events and resources available through Career Services, but Pool hopes the re-working of Houghton’s transitions programs will make these structures more visible and effective.

Surveys show that Houghton students are prepared to encounter the world and become effective leaders in work, ministry, and missions, but Pool said, “We always want to do better.”
