What did God create me to do? How am I supposed to serve Him in this world? What is my identity? These are some of the common questions college students and Christians of all ages try to answer. In Living Fearless, Jamie Winship addresses these identity questions and guides readers on a journey to answer them. He uses moving stories about people living in their God-given identities, and events from his own life, to show how Christians can become fearless when they live out God’s calling in their lives. Winship believes that in order for people to discover their true identities, they need to ask God to reveal it to them.
Winship lays out four main principles to help people live in their true identities: attention, awareness, annunciation, and action. He encourages readers to pay attention and be aware of how the Father moves in their lives. Winship includes prayers that guide readers through silencing other voices and attuning their ears to the voice of the Lord. He then demonstrates how Christians can ask the Lord to announce their true identities and be spurred into action in these identities.
Winship explains that people often give themselves false, fear-based identities: they live by the names given to them by others and themselves, rather than by the names God gives them. To recognize the lies people believe about themselves, Winship encourages people to tell God their “truth” so that He might replace it with His Truth. He writes, “let’s agree to stop reacting in fear, guilt, and shame and begin exchanging our reality for God’s truth so that we can effortlessly and fearlessly give away the peace that we receive” (137). Using guiding questions, Winship provides people with a framework for casting off false identities, attuning their ears to the voice of God, and hearing His calling on their lives. One of my favorite questions Winship encourages people to ask the Lord is: “In relation to my identity, what do you want me to know and what do you want me to do?” (153). When I asked the Lord this question one night, I felt God prompting me to write this review. God is waiting to tell people His truth and show how they can live redemptively if they only ask Him.
I heard from God more than I ever have as I read this book over the summer, and He revealed to me my identity in Christ. Living Fearlesschanged my perspective on how to have a personal relationship with God and how to communicate with Him. The book provides guiding principles on how to open new pathways between yourself and God; helping you hear His voice more clearly. Once you eliminate other voices and discover the lies you might have been believing about God, yourself, and others, you can start hearing God’s voice and ask Him to speak His Truth to you.
If you are wondering about your identity in Christ and want to know who He says you are, I would highly encourage you to read Living Fearless and to ask God to provide the answers. He can show you how to cast off fear and start living redemptively as the person He created you to be. ★
